Advance the Contributions of Medical Physics
Sustain, make consistent, and advocate for the current contributions of medical physics to human health and champion the role of physics in novel clinical spaces and modalities.
Outcomes
- Increase engagement with AAPM content, education, events, and other programming related to current clinical spaces and modalities aiming to make their practice and prevalence consistent.
- Establish a strong AAPM value proposition for physicists supporting diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.
- Foster pioneer physics and physicists in departments where no medical physicist is currently present.
Initiatives
- Define, develop, and advocate for the contributions of medical physicists in the use of radiopharmaceuticals.
- Define, develop, and advocate for the role of medical physicists in medical specialties outside of radiology and radiation oncology.
- Invest in the development, dissemination, and adoption of consensus documents that enhance the consistent practice of medical physics.
Advance New Computational Technologies
Prepare medical physics as a discipline and physicists as practitioners to take full advantage of new computational technologies and serve essential roles in both applied research and clinical application.
Outcomes
- Define the scope of practice for medical physics in computational medicine.
- Increase competency in computational medicine (AI, ML, Digital Twin) among medical physicists.
Initiatives
- Incorporate AI/ML/DT knowledge and practice into core curricula and credentials for medical physics education and training.
- Prepare current medical physics practitioners, and advocate for their role, in the commissioning and performance of clinical AI tools and systems.
Improve Health Equity
Improve equitable access to health care by addressing the growth, development, and training of the medical physics workforce.
Outcomes
- Increase access to consistent diagnostic and therapy medical physics services in clinical facilities in underserved communities.
- Enhance the diversity of the medical physics workforce.
Initiatives
- Develop the Medical Physics workforce with a specific focus on underserved communities and geographies.
- Strengthen undergraduate recruitment into the medical physics career pathway.
Enhance Organizational Sustainability
Transform AAPM's operations and governance to enable members to focus on the science and discipline of medical physics, empower staff to lead association operations, and position AAPM financially to support the next generation of physicists in medicine.
Outcomes
- Achieve a balanced operating budget by the 2027 fiscal year.
- AAPM officers fulfill their duties with no more than 20% of their professional time.
- Reduce overall volunteer time required for governance and administrative processes with AAPM.
Initiatives
- Restructure the AAPM budget to serve as an effective tool to achieve a balanced operating budget.
- Design and implement governance and administrative simplification within the current bylaws framework and identify longer-term changes that would require a bylaws revision.
