Ad Hoc Committee on Nominating-8CAB4326

Home / Publication
The Ad Hoc Committee on Nominating was created in July 2013 by Chair of the Board (Dr. Gary Ezzell) in response to considerable discussion at the AAPM Board of Directors meetings and on the AAPM Bulletin Board Service (BBS). Dr. Ezzell created the Ad Hoc Committee on Nominating to independently look into current Board of Directors and Officer nomination process and suggest any recommended changes if necessary. The specific charges of the ad hoc committee were as follows:

  1. Evaluate relevant statements in the AAPM By-‐Laws, i.e. Section 10 -‐ Nominating Committee.
  2. Identify other professional organizations with similar governance structures and reference their nominations process (e.g. ACR).
  3. Assess the membership of the nominating committee and how it is formed.
  4. Consider the historical results of nominations and election results for members-‐at-‐large and AAPM Executive Committee (nomination origin, institution type, professional degree, area of interest in the AAPM, diversity, etc.).
  5. Investigate the perceived or actual bias created by the current nominating procedure for the AAPM Officers and Board Members-‐at-‐Large.
  6. Evaluate the need for modifications to nomination process to ensure an unbiased election process.
  7. Assess the effectiveness of nominations from the AAPM community for AAPM Officers and Board Members-‐at-‐Large.
  8. Prepare a set of "specific deliverables" regarding the nominating process to the Board and election of Officers as a guidance statement, proposed policy or recommended change to the By-‐Laws.
This report represents a summary of the Ad Hoc committee’s effort over the past two years. Much of this work was summarized in the Fall 2014 AAPM newsletter article “How we choose our leadership: The AAPM election process,” which is appended to this report. The Ad Hoc Committee on Nominating has substantially completed its work in terms of the 8 Charges asked for by Dr. Ezzell including a list of deliverables (Charge 8) and excepting Charge 7 which was deemed outside the scope of what the Ad Hoc could reasonably achieve.
