Strategic goal – Champion equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the field of medical physics

  • Evaluate EDI in the AAPM organizational structure and activities
    • Create historic database of the AAPM organizational composition
    • Collect data from salary survey pertaining to underrepresented minorities
    • Collect demographic data in other AAPM surveys and activities
  • Create and sustain the structure in the AAPM necessary to support the EDI strategic goal
    • Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee and Women’s professional subcommittee will lead the effort to determine the structure needed
    • Create a plan with the nominating committees for positions and awards that come through nomination
    • Assess potential for diversification for groups within the AAPM organizational structure and activities
    • Promote diversity in the regional AAPM representation
  • Promote the inclusion and empowerment of a diverse pool of trainees into the AAPM
  • Create and deliver professional and educational content that supports the importance of EDI, specifically supporting the needs of underrepresented medical physicists
    • Coordinate efforts with the MPLA to create and promote diversity, inclusion, and equity training in leadership
    • Continuously promote and work towards achieving a culture of respect in the medical physics field
    • Incorporate an EDI Symposium as a mainstay of the AAPM Annual and Spring Meeting
    • Appropriately recognize, celebrate, and honor professional and educational commitments to EDI in Medical Physics
  • Collaborate with other professional organizations to implement and support the commitment to EDI in the medical physics field
  • Ensure that the EDI strategic objectives and the AAPM’s core mission of advancing medicine through excellence in the science, education, and professional practice of medical physics are continually aligned
Definitions for reference:

Diversity is broadly defined to include all aspects of human differences, including but not limited to economic status, race, ethnicity, languages, nationality, sex/gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, age, education level, and specialization.

Inclusion refers to when traditionally marginalized individuals and groups feel a sense of belonging and are empowered to participate in majority culture as full and valued members of the community, shaping and redefining that culture in different ways

Equity is the process of creating equivalent outcomes for members of historically underrepresented and oppressed individuals and groups.
