This Report represents an exposition of the concepts which relate some of the principal features of the absorption of ionizing radiation in matter to the size and, perhaps, the nature of the structures being affected, particularly for absorbed doses routinely encountered in radiation protection activities. The report includes major sections on microdosimetric quantities and distributions, primary interactions of radiations with matter, particle tracks and energy deposition, experimental evaluation of microdosimetric spectra, calculation of microdosimetric spectra and their averages, phenomenological presentation of single and multiple event spectra, employment of microdosimetric concepts and techniques. Appendices to the report treat relationships between microdosimetric quantities, graphical presentations of distributions, composition and material constants of tissue equivalent compounds and mixtures, principal technical features of proportional counters used in microdosimetry, details of methods of calculation, and mean values.
